KlearEars Ear wax Removal

KlearEars Earwax Removal York Stonegate Medical Clinic YorkKlearEars York

We are proud to introduce a new safer & quicker way of hearing clearly again which is suitable for all ages performed by doctors using KlearEars.

Ear Wax is a very common problem and can cause a lot of distress. Until now the ways of removing wax was slow and usually involves going to the hospital for difficult wax removal.

Microsuction utilises a tiny vacuum instead of water as is done in ‘syringing’. It is proven to be a safer method than syringing and more effective. Another advantage is that it can also be used for people who cannot have their ears syringed for various medical reasons.

Science of Wax

Ear wax is very common; just under a third of older people experience an ear wax problem.

Ear wax build up can cause any of the following:

  • Hearing loss
  • Earache
  • Tinnitus
  • Vertigo (Dizziness)
  • Cough suspected to be due to earwax

The current treatment for ear wax on the National Health Service is using Olive Oil drops and then, if that fails, using a jet of water to rinse out the ear. A survey of GP practices that cover 650,000 patients showed that from their ear wax removal, 29% failed to remove the ear wax, 17% suffered an outer ear infection as a result of the syringing and 15% suffered a punctured ear drum. Only 19% of the above practices had doctors providing this service, the rest are usually provided by practice nurses.

If this fails then they have to be referred to the hospital’s Ear, Nose and Throat department for a procedure called microsuction where a doctor or specialist nurse uses a microscope and a small vacuum to remove the ear.

Microsuction, by comparison, can have a full clearance success rate of 91%. The wait to be seen in the clinic, certainly in York, can be 3-4 months.

All procedures are conducted by Dr Aaron Brown, one of the pioneers of KlearEars.

Good Wax Advice

  • Some wax is GOOD; it protects your ear canal from bugs and dirt getting in. Wax prevents your ear from getting either too dry or too wet. It is made by tiny glands in the cells that line your ear canal. It is slightly acidic (which helps it fight bacteria) and made of oil, skin cells and a waxy secretion.
  • NEVER PUT ANYTHING SMALLER THAN YOUR ELBOW IN YOUR EAR.
This is a mantra that our Ear, Nose and Throat specialists have been quoting for decades.
  • DO NOT USE cotton buds!
Cotton buds only push ear wax deeper into your ear up to your ear drum.
  • DO NOT try to remove wax yourself with any other implements or products.
  • DO USE OLIVE OIL DROPS. This alone can help your ear wax soften up enough to be removed by your ear’s self-cleaning system. Put a few drops of olive oil (it does not have to be warmed) into the ears on a night then place a cotton wool ball in your outer ear to keep it there. Put a hand towel on your pillow otherwise you will be changing your pillow cases every night. Sodium Bicarbonate drops can also be used.
  • IRRIGATION ON THE NHS. If the olive oil doesn’t work that then your GP may suggest you need your ears irrigated (sometimes called ‘syringing’). Some people cannot have their ears syringed if they have certain ear conditions. The risks of syringing are higher then KlearEars Microsuction, these include damage to the ear drum and can cause infections of the outside of the ear.
